Portrayal of Minorities in the Media (long rant)
Will you people get over yourselves.
In the movies characters are drawn with big black crayons. Italians are mobsters, Germans are evil, crypto-nazis, Irish are fun loving drunks or clever schemers, and blacks are urban criminals.
People like stories clear and simply told.
If this is the biggest problem you have to face, you need to find out how people live in other countries. In lots of places in the world people struggle to find something to eat for the day.
It's only because we live in the luxury offered by western capitalist countries that we have the time to indulged in hurt feelings because of what we see on a movie screen.
I would suggest you take that energy you spent on hurt feelings and make better use of it.

Irrelevant?
Last week some guys in a pickup truck tried to run me off the road. Thanks to the fact that I was driving with the top down, I could hear the passenger call me a 'chink.' I've had eggs thown at me, skinheads chase me, and my house vandalized. (I've even had creepy WWII vets come up to me and tell me that I killed their best friend... WTF?)
Sure, all of this means nothing compared to the sufferings of those who have to worry about where their next meal is from... but what would you do? Just grin and bear it? I'm a United States citizen. I pay taxes, play by the rules, and make an honest living. I at least deserve to be left alone. Does wanting that make me too self-important?

Following on from this topic; given that Beijing's bid for the 2008 Olympic games will probably be deemed successful on Friday, I will be curious to see the media's reaction to this event.
I have already seen some articles and stories expressing concerns about the political ramifications of awarding the games to China.
My take on is this, even if staging the Olympic Games in China does nothing else of benefit, it will shine the spotlight directly upon them. It may give the world a chance to see what the place is like (even in an artificial climate such as the Olympics) and even though no story can be told completely objectively, I can be happy that people will have more than Jacky Chan movies and "Big Trouble In Little China" to formulate an opinion on the Chinese.
Just as the Sydney Olympics undoubtably gave the world a better idea of what it is like here and has brought a lot to my fair city, I can only hope that the Beijing Olympics (should they win) is even more successful and brings some lasting beneficial change here, there and everywhere else.
Otherwise, I guess we'll be learning more about the French or the Canadians
