i use pinnacle's "studio 8."
it captures, edits, add special effects and 3d titles,
generates vid files and burns cds all at the same time.
i find it easy to use, not too expensive, pretty flexible and comfortable to play around.
you can make common video files such as mpg, avi and rm, and also make vcd and,
dvds, if you have dvd writing driver.

all my "stupid seung" video series i posted on this forum are made with this program.

can u give me hints of what frame setting you use for capturing (in order to make good quality in reasonable file size)?

one small hurdle I stumbled upon when capturing is the 4GB or 15min limitation set by certain Windows Operating Systems - Win98 to be exact!

I have tried to use iMovie on OS X and come to find the picture is about 5% darker on the Mac??

for capturing... i just use the best quality, because if i capture in low quality and decide to generate vid file
with good/ better quality, the program has to capture the vid again from the dv.
in other words, capturing and the vid file output works separately.

for vid files... i dunno, it depends on what kind of presentation you wanna make.
for example, i had this big 5 min. presentation for my school, i made a vid file in dvd quality.
that took me 2 hour just to generate the file, 250 mb.

then, for a small fun files like i post on this forum, i do it low, low, low quality, sometime even without the sound,
because i wanna make people to be able to view it as quick as possible- it's unlikely that they are going to try to appreciate the color and the sound, or the composition like the school crits.

so, it all depends.
just try out diff. settings and you'll find one set up that you like.

Seung nailed it. That software package will do the whole shebang with minimal headache. I have yet to see any product perform as well as Pinnacle Studio. (Unless you feel like plunking down $5,000...)
