PS2, XBox, GameCube........
I am thinking about getting an PS2 but anyone here know anything about those other consoles??? How would they fare against PS2??? I do want to buy PS2 because of GT3, tho....
I was totally impressed by the Gamecube while at E3 and from most of the after show reports that I read, that was the consensus. The Star Wars game was awesome and Luigi's castle and it looked brilliant.
I was in the video game industry for about 11 years and have worked on games back from the old Apple II's up through Dreamcast, PS2, and early X-box and Gamecube development. The PS2 is deficient in video memory compared to the other two so programmers have to really work at it to swap things in and out of memory to keep things flowing. Textures and images can't be as detailed either due to the lack of video memory. The PS2 is a great machine though and the longer that developers have to work on it, they will figure out ways to work around video memory limitations. Not a problem with the X-box and Gamecube though.
I have not even purchased a PS2 yet. In fact, I just started playing Perfect Dark on my Nintendo 64 again to finish it on the hardest level. I also want to check out Unreal Tournament for the Dreamcast as I love it on the PC but want to see it on my big screen.
I will buy a Gamecube when it is released later this year though but I will still wait a bit on the X-box and PS2.
Just my 2 cents.

As much as I love to bash Microsoft, I'm waiting to see what the Xbox looks like.
Here's my opinion:
I have a ps2 and it's great. It's the best thing out so far. The hardware isn't as nice as the xbox, but the games are better. Can you say, gt3.. Sony has a huge following and will continue to develop great games.. games that you can't get on the xbox. I think once the xbox is out it will have some good games as well, and I'll probably buy an xbox.
The console market hasn't changed much. There will always be new consoles and each one will have more gaming power than the previous one. The big question is game development. Which system has the best games?? The gamecube may have more power than the ps2, but it's games will probably be geared more towards kids. That leaves the ps2 and the xbox. Right now sony has the games and the fans, but i'm willing to bet ms will spend as much money as it needs to on game development. I don't think ms will quit until they've won. This is a good thing for us, the consumers!!

Console specs are secondary to marketing.
Look at the N64. By all measures a better console than the Sony PlayStation. But sony were better at marketing (learnt their lesson from the beta fiasco), and as a result of the CD technology and pirating, totally eclipsed N64.
t this point in time I'd say the PS2 is the console of choice. X-box is a good bet too as you can expect MS to make a big push and PC games come across easily. This leaves good old Nintendo. Dunno.
Or you could just buy a Dreamcast cheap!

(Oh yeah, I already put down my deposit for GT3 and I don't have a PS2 yet)!
