What is a fish in the southern hemisphere, but a dwarf in the northern?
This is a friggin tough puzzle, but for many people when you read the answer it'll teach you a little bit about astronomy.
That's your first hint. I'll give a few more hints a bit later.
EDIT: don't bother trying. you'd have to have read my mind (and my girlfriend's mind) to get this one.

noooooo... a lil closer to home. more lunar than stellar. the answer comes in phases.
another hint: 2 words, 3-letters each. palindrome.
jeez, you guys are gonna hate me for this. but I promise, it will atleast teach some of you a nice memorization device.

my gf and I are driving down to So. Cal today (not in the S). after we get back from Malibu, I'll post the answer.
I can't think of any more hints that won't give away the answer, except maybe this one:
remember, this answer is a memorization device... and is kinda silly and simple, but that means you'll never forget it.

the answer is: COD and DOC
DOC (one of the Seven Dwarfs, for those of us in the N. Hemisphere)
COD (a fish, for those in the S. Hemisphere)
A while back, I wasn't certain when looking at the moon as to whether it was waxing or waning... whether we were heading towards a full moon or a new moon... and my gf told me to just remember DOC (of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs). When the moon is shaped like a "D" it is waxing (becoming more full), O = full moon, and C = waning (becoming a new, or unlit moon).
I realized that this memorization device only works for those in the N. Hemisphere, and that for those in Australia, it would be COD.
Then I came up with the puzzle, so I would never forget it.
Apologies to those who were expecting a profound answer, but atleast you'll never forget the moonphases now.
(I anticipate a few

responses. To which I have to say:
