I think, waaaaay back... it was mean as "Quarantined Tip" which is what we these days would call "Sterile". This is, of course, only what I've heard, but since I love researching, I'll dig around on this one (pardon the pun )

"Q" = Quality
Originally called "Baby Gays". In 1926, renamed Q-tips Baby Gays. "Baby Gays" was soon abandoned.
They are currently manufactured by "Lever-Ponds".
