The best suggestion I can make is to do one of a few things:

1.) Talk to the professors and attempt to finish the coursework. Best option.

2.) Retake the classes and have them "redlined" this will fix her overall GPA but the fails will still be on record. In this case the graduate school would not be as likely to dismiss her application.

I would expect that the two F's have lowered her GPA substantially and the course credit was probably needed for graduation. So retaking these courses would be very important.

Also talk to the director of admissions from her graduate department. It maybe the dept head so getting an appointment could take a week or so. Ask the addmissions person directly, what they focus on for admission and what she can do to rectify the situation.

Was she not provided with a class syllabus? It seems like a pretty major oversight to not know when two of your classes end.

When she writes her personal statement, have her be sure to mention it. Also, she will have to do really well on the entrance exam for whatever program she is going into. If she has any real-world experience that will help, too....mention that in the personal statement, as well.

My situation was that I failed a class as a freshman in college b/c I was an idiot, then ended up w/ a high final two semester GPA 3.6, and high major GPA 3.8 b/c I got my act together. I also had research experience before I went in. However, I didnt do so hot on the GRE. I talked about this in the personal statement that they ask for and low and behold, I got in. Good luck, hope this helps!

There shouldnt be any reason that she will have to wait that long to get some answers unless the profs are out of the country. One of the challenges faced in college is mastering the paper chase. Someone will have answers for her, she just needs to keep making phone calls until she finds that person.

Also if she was in the hospital during the semester and it conflicted with her completion of assignments she should receive an incomplete for the classwork rather than a failing grade. Again this is an issue to discuss directly with the professors in charge of the course.

I'd also suggest that she have ready papers to document her surgery/hospital stay/recovery time in case that's needed as "proof".

I don't know of many colleges that close down for the summer, so chances are that there's someone there to speak to - it's just a matter of finding that person & tracking him or her down. It's probably a safe bet that she should plan on talking to the course professors, the head of that department, and possibly the dean of that section (ie: dean of college of education, dean of the business school, etc.).

Some colleges also offer the option of declaring "academic bancuptcy" for one semester. If there were good reasons, and it sounds like there were, for her to fail the classes, then she can have the entire semester removed from her record. Of course, not all schools do this.
Another option that some colleges offer is to re-take the class and average the two grades as a final grade.
Good luck.
