I have a beater truck and honestly I don't know if I could live without it. Right now I'm redoing the garage and basement so having a vehicle that can haul lumber, sheetrock, etc. whenever I need is very helpful.
I agree, if you get a truck, buy a used truck that you don't have to worry about keeping it nice. Find one for around the $1500 and keep the minimal insurance on it to be able to drive it.

i've never needed a truck/suv. For really big stuff I pay someone to deliver the shit white glove style and take the boxes and crap with them.

Hardly anyone owns a truck/pickup in Europe... it really is an American mentality from what I've seen. People use the excuse "I'll haul my stuff in it", and end up hardly ever doing it for that. It's just a convenience to sit so high up and "feel" protected in such a large vehicle.

Personally, I don't need one. A trunk in any convertible is big enough to carry around just about everything you'll ever need on a day to day shopping basis, and if you need to buy something big, just ask the shop to send it over to your place. In a worst case situation, it'll cost you a hundred bucks, and that's still a LOT less then if you were to buy the car.

I probably solicit the help of a moving company (for large furniture and the like) once or twice a year, and in most cases, I've managed to negotiate transportation for free. Saved me a pretty penny in owning a truck/pickup.

Totally unecessary to own one (imo of course... unless you're really the kind that DOES move a lot of stuff around constantly, mostly due to their job, and if that is the case, a Van is a better choice as you'll be protecting the goods INSIDE the vehicle).

Oh yeah, Jeremy Clarkson once did a review of some pickup, placed a few candles and stuff in the back. Some chav promptly nicked them while he was sitting at a red light. lol

Looks like everyone pretty much agrees that a truck is not necessary. Thanks for the input.

It's handy but not a necessity. As others say, it's cheaper to rent one the few times you absolutely need it ($20 at Home Depot, I believe, for one trip) than to try and maintain, insure, and pay for a vehicle.

If you just need it to bring home some plywood now and then, it's not worth it.

We use my truck for all sorts of stuff though, and wouldn't be able to do a lot of that without it. Or, it makes those things much, much easier.

Even better to have a pal or family member with a truck. No need for one then.

Unless you want to become a redneck, listen to bad C&W music, and need a place to but your beer cans.

Until I have a constant need for a truck, I won't be getting one. For duties around the house, I can use my brother-in-laws truck or I have a few friends with trucks.

There are only 2 cars in the house (right now). My S and my fiance's accord. Now, if I start doing more track stuff and start towing the S to those places, then I will gladly get a truck.

You have to remember, if you have an S', you have a fun car which anyone driving a truck will most likely trade for a day for.

My parents have a truck and my mom is always asking if we need to borrow it. I just tell her she can borrow the S' anytime she wants, she doesn't have to wait till i need the truck.
