[QUOTE=tcho82,Jul 19 2006, 03:09 PM] It's funny how you say the fakes sell to the superficial.

I couldn't agree with you more on the Rolex claim, which is why I do not own one, and have no plans to purchase one. Even when it was offered as a gift. I chose something else...

Rolex isn't a bad watch. But it isn't all it has been hyped up to be. I would say only the chronometer's are decent.

Its got decent old man style but I never liked the "stuffiness" that is associated with owning a Rolex. Maybe when I'm 50 I'll pick up a Rolex. But for now I like my modern and or contemporary time pieces.

People buy different things for different reasons.

Rolex is overhyped and overpriced. I looked at the Omega Seamaster and Rolex Submariner side by side, and the Omega looked like a higher quality watch in comparison, especially the bracelet and clasp.

most Omega Seamaster pro (SMP)(except for the special edition 007 or chronograph) has printed markers on the dial only. if you look close enough, some of the lume material on the printed markers could be off center or bleed outside. the tip of the second hand seemed to be dipped in paint instead of applied evenly. omega also uses ETA movements (though its a high chronometer grade movement).

rolex has applied indices with polished edges (white gold?), and in house movement (which is famous for being robust and accurate), and rolex is famous for their attention to detail. my complain of a rolex is the bracelet. they just never seemed *as solid as* even a bracelet from seiko with solid links and end links. and omega SMP is using push button clasp while rolex is still using folding lock.

the screwdown crown on the rolex (sub or Sea dweller) is just WAY better than omega SMP

if you want to see how to make a REALLY good clasp, check out Seiko Marinemaster 300m auto (SBDX001) (or other high end Seiko Prospex watches). Seiko makes a very adjustable diver extension that's actually useful for everyday (not only for over the dive suit)!

if you think Omega SMP (blk dial or bond model) is the same (or higher) quality than a rolex sub, then i suggest you to save the money and buy a $150 Seiko diver, cause you won't be able to tell the difference between Seiko and Omega as well.

Basically, you are s.o.l. if the watch craps out on you and you want to return it to the manufacturer.

Hey, take a trip to St. Thomas or Hong Kong and get a watch duty free for about the same price!
I got a TISSOT T Touch on a Carnival Cruise for $400 duty free.

I have a Rolex Yachtmaster, and yes, the markers have white gold edges. The bracelet also has solid links and solid end links, unlike older bracelets. The clasp is still not as good as the one on the Daytona bracelet, but it's still nice.

I was never all that interested in Rolex myself, but once I started reading up on them I found that there was a lot of substance behind the hype. I went to my local AD, tried on a Yachtmaster in SS/PT, and loved it. It fits extremely well, and has a great feel to it.

Rolex make and sell approx 800,000 watches a year. The company is still family owned, and the profits are donated to charity. They raise prices because they can. If the watches didn't sell, well, that might be a problem. But they do sell.

The YM is my keeper watch at the moment.

Dave.

Hey guys,

Thanks again for all of your tips. I had a chance to take a short trip to Hong Kong last weekend and was able to find the B&R watch that I wanted. It took a lot of walking but thankfully it wasn't for nothing. Before I took the trip, I looked online and wrote down all of the prices from each site. I ended up getting mine for about 15% below the lowest price I saw online. I'm pretty happy with what I got!

Thanks again!

-Mike

Thanks. Just took these. Sorry for the so-so shots. My camera doesn't take close-ups that well.
