My friends who dropped out of college have been making more than me and are still making more than me.
It's possible, but I bet you 80% of the young stook owners are simply buying with other people's money. After they "laundered" it, it becomes theirs. Sure you own a business at age of 20, where did you get money to start the business? You borrowed it from a bank? I'm not buying it. You earned it with part time job when you were 16 and 17? Forgive me if I'm not buying that either.
So why do so many young kids claimed to have bought themselves a stook? Well, it's your turn to forgive them. They just like to brag. As you said, they are just kids. Didn't you ever brag about something when you were a kid?
There, is your curiosity satisfied?
By posting a question like this, you are inviting more people to brag about it, while the real reason is easily analyzed and discovered.

I find it interesting how young people would put down all their savings to buy a car and then have payments that basically strap them.

When I was 18 my goals were to own my own home, start a retirement plan, save money and then if possible buy my dream car. At that time it was a 1970 big block Vette.

Well at 24 I purchased my first home and had a savings and retirement plan in place. At the age of 26 I purchased my dream car a 1970 454cu Corvette.

In 1998 I purchased my second home.

I think younger people are to impatient to achieve status and forget that life goes by very fast.

I have many friends who earn the same money or more but they have nothing to show for it. They rent a apartment and have high credit card balances.

They often tell me how lucky I am that I have a nice house and a 34k toy in the garage that I only take out on weekends.

This kind of annoys me b/c I know the sacrifices that were made when I was younger, while they were partying and living the high life.

A piece of advice I would give to the young people here. Save and invest your money , buy some property, never have credit card balances. The years go by very quickly.

I am 35 now and in a position financially that if things would turn bad I would have no worries. All because of a few years of discipline when I was young.

If you had directed something like this toward me I would be offended. I think you have no right to assume anything. I bought this car when I did because of sufficient financial means and there are others like me who I'm sure did just that as well. FYI, I did not buy this car because I wanted to increase my "status" or "brag" about it. I bought it because it has value, both fiscally and personally. Don't blame kids (wherever they got their money from) for having a certain type of car and accuse them of "bragging". After all, it is just a car.

Also, these "kids" you mention are much more dynamic these days than ever before in previous generations. Don't underestimate their capabilities.

Three words - Live At Home. It's really easy to dump most of your income into a car if you don't have to cover any other living expenses. I bought a home before I bought my S2K, but if I didn't have to pay for the home, I'd be cruising in a Viper right now instead

c'mon folks, time has changed, its not the 70s, 80s, even 90s anymore, its the new millienium !

i mean, look at the young celebrities like britney or nsync or ...... , they work day and night, and have to deal with the consequences not living a normal life. But they are rich, dont even need credit to buy a car or a house.

So are professional atheletes ..... how old is Kobe ? I dont think he is old enough to drink yet ....... seen his house ?

Younger folks like me pay respect to older folks who drive nice cars, live in big houses, coz we know it came from years of hard work and now he/she is enjoying it ..... but like i said, time has changed, people are enjoying their money much earlier now .....

Well, I don't have an S2k but my car is worth $31,156 and my uncle bought it for me but I'm very grateful, I definitely didn't take it for granted. I'm a good student but anyways..

My friend was 15 I think? when he started the infrastructure for his internet web hosting company, by the time he was 18 he was making into the 6 figures and bought himself two Corvettes, one a drop top, one a hard top. Idiot shoulda bought a Z06. He also graduated early from high school and went to UCSB, smart guy. Borrowed money from Dad.

Another kid at my school (Irvine High School), some of you may have heard of him (graudated) named Tulga. He was also into computers at a very young age and started his own web/programming/scripting based company. By the time he was 18 he sold his company for $1,000,000, mostly all in the stock which technically makes him a millionaire. He bought himself a Del Sol with a MP3 player. Don't know if he really needed that much money to start up his company.

My other friend is only 17 and was just offered a job as a MCSE technician, that's a good 50-70 grand starting. Now if he lives at home for another year and doesn't have to worry about expensives, he can buy himself a pretty damn expensive car. Doesn't need to borrow money.

These are just a few examples. A lot of my other friends just save their cash and get help from their parents if they need money. And some parents/relatives just buy the whole car for them, and they're grateful for it.

There are kids out there working their ass off and nowadays more and more kids are getting wealthy at a young age getting a good job or building a company. Times have changed.

Remember just because your industry doesn't make you a lot of money some industries are actually wanting teenage workers. The computer industry is one for 18-20 year old workers. Why? Because we have no family, no wife, no commitments, catch on fast, and can work all day saturday and sunday and still be there at 7am monday morning, and make good money. This is changing as the industry went from under-qualified employees to over-qualified employees with more to lose but this is just recently happening. Most of the people I have met with s2k's either work in the computer industry or manage something or other for a friend or family. I work in the computer industry and got a lump sum from inheritance that I used to buy my s2k, and I invested the rest into an IRA (people wouldn't stop bashing me about wasting it). I now realize that I should have bought a freaking house!

If a network goes down at 3am on Sunday morning I'll go fix it!

(with OT pay of course)
