Default Rant: People who can't help themselves

I have a real problem with people who refuse to help themselves. I'll give two examples, even though I could bring up many more.

My mom: She came to this country at the age of 37 without speaking a single word of English. She attended some English as a Second Language classes at our local high school and the rest she learned on her own. No easy task by any means. That was 8 years ago. Today she can't speak it perfectly, but the problem is that she refuses to learn anymore. Her biggest problem is pronouns and pronunciation. Most of the time she will call a man "she" or a woman "he". My sister and I always correct her when we're around her, but her response is always this "Don't correct me, I know how to speak, and my coworkers never correct me when I say something wrong". If she was able to learn a new language at the age of 37, I'm sure that she could learn it even better if she wanted to.

A co-worker: He is about 60 years old. At this point he is ranking second highest in our organization, which is small with about 60 employees. He is the most disorganized person ever and it is severely affecting his work. Let's just say that his filing cabinet consists of 4 stacks of paper piled 2-3 feet high on his desk. He can never find anything, and it's a problem. Since there is a difference in ranks in the organization, I can only give hints/suggestions, but he's just not getting it.

I know that nobody is perfect and I have my weaknesses too. The only difference is that I'm trying to resolve my weaknesses. I make threads about, talk to people about it and do my best to resolve them. I just hope that as I get older I don't become a closed-minded person like them.

I love rants..... especially about idiotic people...... i could go on for years about just my idiotic relatives too.....

I guess..... at least your mom learned to speak english. I have a friend who came to the USA from Vietnam in 1976 or so. His parents still barely speak english. "you Bow friend" "This Bow mother". at age 2, my kids could speak more gooder...

I think the average person is content with not learning new stuff, not really getting ahead and not really ever having anything. Our factory and warehouse workers (and most office workers) are right there. Go to work, eat like hogs, drink some beer, sleep.... go to work, eat like hogs, drink some beer, sleep.... what a life!

Seems like most people on *this* board are smarter than that.

I certainly have experienced something like this, the worse part about people who do not want to help themselves is when they start blaming everyone else about their situation etc.

I don't get your point. Yes nobody is perfect, but everyone is capable of improving.
