The realization came almost 4 years into my marriage...
Dang Richard, why was I always picturing you as some old, venerable dude? Man, what a warped sense we get of people having only read their words and never having heard their voice, seen their face, or just hung out.

I for one want a girl who is nothing like my mother.
my mom always say "you want to know what she looks like in 30 years? LOOK AT HER MOM!!"
i took a look at some of my ex-girlfriends' mothers...and ran as fast as i could!!
The first time I told my child, "Because I said so!" I thought ... "Self, you're going to have to do some serious policing not to become your mother."
I have worked hard to police the behaviors I didn't like in my mom. I've significantly reduced how much I talk (at least 50% less than my mother). I vow to stay young at heart and remember what it was like to be my teenage son's age. I hope I've retained her good qualities ... enjoying your surroundings, curiosity about things (stopping to check out landmarks when traveling, etc.), caring about your family.
But, I just can't see my mom ever driving an S2000 (either now or when she was young).

i'm with s2k-redhead. i've made careful note of the things my mom did while i was growing up. my mom relied entirely on my dad for everything, and i mean everything. she never stood up for us when we wanted to partake in school activties. so i grew up extremely sheltered and without any social skills. i don't want to make the same mistakes with my kid. but my mom has many good qualities. she's come very far for someone with only a 6th/7th grade education. she's very smart and hard working. my 1st baby is coming in 8 wks and i will have to watch myself very carefully. by the same token, i hope i am not like my mother in law, she borders on obsessive-compulsive about cleanliness.
