Mmm, depends. I've done the same thing as you, with computers, cameras, stereo equipment, etc. I've never tried to pass the stuff off as new, though. I just ask the intended recipient if they would like item x, and if so, I give it to them.
I'm not saying you intend the recipient to think the MP3 player is new, but I'd be annoyed if someone gave me a previously used item wrapped up to look like new. That is, if I could tell

just tell the reciptient, "Hey I've got this MP3 player that I've had for 6 months but I never use it... would you like it? It's yours for free if you think you'll get some use out of it..."

I think it's ok if you don't try to pass it off like it's new -- just tell them.

As long as it is a new gift in it's original package and not what you want I don't see it as a problem, but don't repackage a used item to give away as a gift.

What everyone else says. If you try to gift is as new that's tacky. OTherwise regifting is not a bad deal.

I usually think of regifting as giving something as a gift that your recieved as a gift and don't like. For instance we got some stuff from our baby shower that is not on the resistry that my wife does not like. We don't have receipts for it and it's all new and unused but not her style, so she is going to give it to someone else as a gift.

As s2000raj stated, I would only regift something that I got as a gift but didn't like. I would never regift an old, used item. IMO that's tacky. And if you try to pass it off as a new one, thats just plain wrong.

I have regifted NEW gifts. People give me cologne, wallet, etc that I dont like and I will just regift it. However, you must always keep track of the trail. That is to make sure that the person who originally gave it to you can in no way find out or know the person you gave it to.
