Default Rental cars can be tracked!

There was a clip on National Public Radio last night about a guy in MA who rented a car from Acme Rental and saw an additional $400 charge on his bill. When he inquired about the charge, he was told that it was because he was clocked doing more than 75 mph on certain parts of his trip. The case is currently being litigated. In the radio interview, the lawyer representing Acme admitted that all their rental cars have a GPS tracking device and in the fine print of the rental agreement, it states that every incident of excessive speed will be fined $100. Holy crap!!

I guess I should stick to off-roading rental cars at slow speeds rather then speeding

Damn! Next thing you know, they'll be fitting rental cars with g-force sensors so that I can't autocross them anymore.

Many car rentals have aggressive policies; They offer low book rates then try and overcharge customers with fuel charges, damage charges, and now speeding charges! I once rented a car at the SF airport from a lesser agency. Upon return, some 17 year old kid started pointing out a few scratches that existed on our POS Taurus and writing up an invoice... Of course we did not end up having to pay, but what a blood-pressure raising hassle... Never again.

Hertz with AAA discount works for me!

What's next? If Onstar or other GPS features become standard on all new cars, all sorts of things can be monitored. Did everyone read "1984" in high school.

I worked my way through college as a rental car jockey for Enterprise Rent-A-Car. Let me tell ya from an insiders view. Rental car companies are lower than scum. They will screw you everyway possible and be sure that you are being overcharged. ALL rates are negotiable. Most people don't know that and get taken. The insurance is pure profit for them. Enterprise really pressures it down your throat. They treat their employees like crap too and have high turnover. Real cut throat business.
