Rescued a lost dog over the weekend
so i went out to PA for the weekend, a little town north of stroudsberg. anyway, my brothers and i have been going there since we were kids since my grandparents live there. we know of this little river that runs over some large boulders, effectively creating a natural water slide. well, we hiked down to the area and were swimming around a deeper section when we look up and see this dog shivering its ass off on a rock ledge above some water. it looked pretty messed up so we approached with caution.
i saw it had a tag so i grabbed a stick and used the stick to lift up its mouth (no reaction from the dog, it was kind of comatose) and read the tag. rabies vacccinated so i became a bit more lax. the shocking part was the dog had a tag from maxwell airforce base in alabama. so we are sitting there, petting the dog, thinking about what to do. the dog wasnt budging and was too large to put in my day pack. i take down all the info i can and we decide we will come back after we get a means to transport it. it was a 20 min hike to get down there and carrying the dog was out of the question. we turn around, sad about leaving the dog, but partially satisfied with our effort. after a few steps, we hear the ummistakable clamor of dog tags. Shocked, i turn around and see "maxwell" following behind us, wagging her tail carefully navigating herself over the rough rocks. she follows us unwaveringly, except for steep hills, where we must pick her up or find an alternate route. when we reach our car, we load her in and bring her back to my grandparents house where we feed it and try and get some answers. first thing i do is call the number on the tag, all the way in alabama... no answer.
numerous attempts at getting ahold of animal rescue proved fruitless. one final attempt before i bring the animal back to my home in jersey to bring to our shelter. We call the state police local hq and get a voice. we tell them what happened and the like. "we had someone come here and post flyers not an hour ago concerning two lost dogs from alabama". we get the number and drop them a line. 30 min later, the teary eyed owners are re united with their lost dog. unfortunatley, one is still out there, which i fear was injured. the two jumped out of their parked car while they ran inside a store. i think the other dog must have fallen near where we were. one would think the two would have stuck together, although i am no expert. regardless, it felt good to reunite the dog and owner, and i drove away with a small smile on my face, knowing i made at least one persons day.
