rev limiter in my prelude
There has been some talk lately about the s2k's rev limiter, how it works and how it won't prevent damage in the even to down shifting at too drastic a rev and causing damage due to momentum of the parts in the engine (since the rev limiter only cuts off fuel).
Well, this has nothing to do with my s2k, but with my 94' prelude vtec. I was going quite fast in 5th gear (possible 100+) and down shifted into 3rd (I think). Anyway, the tach needle jumped into the 8400-8500 range. I felt the rev limiter kick in immediately and the fuel was cut. Now keep in mind the redline on the vtec preludes are about 7400. Anyway, in a desperate attempt to save someting (anything!) I jammed on the clutch. However, the engine kept spinning!
I could feel the harsh vibration under my clutch foot. It was really loud and I could tell the enigne was getting worked to death. Eventually, as the revs came down, the clutch did manage to disengage the gears.
So is this what they're talking about when they say that the rev limiter won't prevent "momentum" related damage?
This car has got ~165k miles on it and I have brought it too hell and back. Its been through a clutch and a transmission. I beat it to death with no mercy. I spends more time in VTEC than any other RMP range. I feed it Quickstop gas. Yeah, its definitely a beater. I should be so lucky that the car's been as forgiving as it has been. I'm just wondering how come the incident I described above didn't cause catastrophic damage as has been described in this forum

I think all rev-limiters do the same thing ... Probably the difference here is the revs. Since a Prelude has lower revs, you could be quite alright. Anyhow, if you don't have a problem driving the car like the way you trash it everyday ... Why worry about it? Unless a problem surfaces, pure speculation doesn't change anything.
