and most importantly, hope he doesn't spend any of the links in the meantime

I guess the key is to get chains of 1, 2 and 4 links (1, 10, 100 in binary) and you can form any combination from 0 - 7 with that (sort of like doing chmods).
Yeah, these two premises are arguably a little inconsistent:
1) He demands precise payment each day.
2) He never spends any of it.
Nevertheless, riddles require that you let go of ordinary situations and look for the odd solutions, that, despite their implausability, are still solutions.
