I think the ridges are twisted so the bullet (which is a depleted uranium shell) comes out it a very rapid and tight spiral. A spinning bullet travels in a straighter line, thereby being more accurate.

Yes it's for riffling...I work on a gun of that type (the phalanx on a DDG) Ours only has six barrels and the rounds are 20mm...but it shoots 150rounds in two seconds!! cool huh. My car is alot more fun though..
