Default Rolling back the speedo...input please!

My "other" car is a 92 4Runner and I really enjoy it. I bought it last summer from the same dealer I bought the S2000's from. It then had 78, 000 miles and the interior is in excellent shape, body is OK, but there are some scratches here and there, no big deal.

Well, I glanced down at the brake pedal today and I saw a frightening site! On the bottom right of the pedal, the pad is worn completely all the way down to the metal!

So that gets me to thinking that perhaps there were 178,000 miles on it when I got it.

How on earth would I find out if the speedo has been rolled back?! If this is the case, I'm gonna unleash some major fury on these bastards, I already hate Honda dealers, I might just go postal...

How do I go about this?!?

Greg,

I don't have a clue, but in California we have an Automotive Consumer Protection Agency (or some such thing) that researches these and other complaints. Perhaps you have a similar org in your state that could help.

Go to a Toyota dealer and ask them to run the VIN and give you a printout. If the car has ever been in to a dealer for service or work of any kind, they will have recorded the date and mileage at that time. This information might help you to extrapolate what the real mileage should be.

I have a car that's done 12,000km (<8,000 miles) and I just had to replace the clutch pedal rubber because it was worn right through. I don't think this means too much...

OK, well, I just got a Car Fax report on the truck and it's clean. There are points along the way that the truck was in for emissions testing and the miles match up.

I am really surprised that the pedal pad wore out though.

Thanks, guys!

80k? That seems pretty good for pedal rubber.

You need to take the dash appart, and look at the spedo. You should be able to tell if it has been taken appart. Another direct indecation is to look and see if all the numbers line up. If there off a little, then it's been alterd.

Does the truck have the type of speedo that only goes to 100K miles? If so, you have no way of knowing true mileage. Odo tampering would probably not even occured.
