The people choose to work there... they can also choose to leave and find something else. But it's a hard decision... become a beggar in the street or having something that at least pays.

It has been doing a lot of pouting recently, I wouldn't be surprised.

As far as the factory goes, this is life for millions in China that congregate to the cities for "better lives" - nothing unique about this factory. If it appalls you, think about this article next time you buy anything made in China.

I think this factory has 300,000 workers - they work, eat, sleep, and socialize on a campus larger than many American cities. These cities are like giant college campuses in some ways - full of young people, away from their families for the first time, in a stressful environment. Its crazy what life is like in China to us, but its a lot like the US with the advent of manufacturing at the beginning of the 20th century, except they have more than a single company store, they have a bunch of company stores, and easy enough access to what's outside the factory.

This is the environment that child labor laws, minimum wage laws, work hours laws, and unions emerged from. What you're basically seeing in China today is what the US was like 100 years ago, but on a bigger scale.
