Sales Rep. Salary
Hey guys,
I interviewed for a sales rep. position, I won't say the name of the company but it is a Well known aftermarket Automotive performance company. Located down here in So. Cal. They asked how much salary I was thinking of. I threw out the first figure off the top of my head.
Later my friend who currently works there told me that his manager was suprised at my low offer.
What is the industry standard for sales reps these days?

completely dependent on the industry. I have no idea what the salary range is for aftermarket automotive performance parts salesman, but I would expect 65k+ commission from any sales job that required me to wear a suit, but not go door to door. I would expect 85k + commission if the job required a technical background or knowledge attainable mainly through a 4-year technical degree (i.e. you went to college and learned something applicable).. of course this job would also require some previous experience. So 50k sounds ok to me unless you're wearing a suit
thanks for the input guys, if I get the call back I'll try to get the offer a bit higher, but 50k is gonna be a stretch. I also forgot to mention that this is and entry level position.

In San Diego, with no degree (and even sometimes w/ degree) and it being an entry level position, $30k plus commission is more than standard. I have seen even less, such as $22-25k base salary plus commission. Really depends on the industry, your experience, your education, etc etc.
I would assume auto part sales is on the lower end of the scale, as you are not dealing with high end priced goods. If you were in the technical side, or software sales, then $40-50k would be more likely. But entry level, hard to get more than $30-40k in San Diego. There are too many people looking for sales jobs, they don't need to pay more unless you have tangible experience.
What confuses me is that you have a friend that works there, yet you didn't do very good research and find out what he though you should ask for? He should have been able to give you an inside scoop on what the manager was willing to pay up to....

I myself market Extended Auto Warranties, 21 years old and making 75k give or take depending on the amount of deals made. When i first started a bit over a year back i was making about 600$ a week. another thing to also consider is how hard are you willing to push ur product, if u really truly want to sell overy person out there on why they should buy ur product u should make 100+ in no time..... I hope to be making 150k next year
