school textbooks
Oh, also look at the foreign versions of Amazon (eg amazon.cn) and ebay, and yahoo, etc. In a lot of countries, pirate books are a big problem (printers that make replicas of expensive books for cheap), so publishers are trying to combat them with low cost editions of textbooks printed on newsprint-quality paper. If you can find them, you can pick up ~$15 versions of $150 textbooks.

If you don't like the prices of textbooks, then you should simply stop buying them, and drop out of school. Send them a message! That'll teach 'em!
I have found that text books have the same general info in them. Physics haven't change, Maths haven't change, Chemistry hasn't change. The only thing that change seem to be American History taught in Texas (but that's for another thread
)
my suggestions:
get an used book.
go to classes & listen to lectures.
in this day and age of instant info from the internet, there's much less of an excuse to not know anything.
when I was in college I drove a POS Sentra that keep breaking down, working on the side to support my studies. I find that the OP drive a relatively nice car and complaining about price of books to be incongruous.
you know what people say about priorities.

^ While I agree with setting priorities. I don't think it's fair to make the assumption he's complaining because he can't afford them, because his priority is a nice car. I take it as more of an un-needed expense that is inflated due to publishers and schools always having to have the latest editions.

Maybe I came across too harsh. Text books are expensive.
However, education is important.
I still believe that if you can spend $20K on a car, you can spend $4K on text books.

that's not why I'm complaining. I just think the book racket is horse shit.
and the car is paid off, from back when I was making better money.
