Default Search Engine Troubles

I don't know if I have a virus on my computer or not, but for some reason I can't use Yahoo, Google, or AskJeeves search engines. The only one that works is excite. I have run my government issued symantec virus scan, spybot, and ad aware, and they never fix the problem. When I type in yahoo, it gives the page does not exist screen, and to check my URl for problems. When I try and goto Google or AskJeeves, I get some generic page that says those URL's don't exist. I am not at home, so I can't do any screen shots right now.

Didn't know if anyone else here has had this happen to them before, or what I can do to fix it. Thanks in advance!

Sounds like a possible DNS problem?

Try going to:

http://216.239.37.99/

Can you see Google now?

I am at work right now, and figured I would throw my problem out here for possible solutions. I will try when I go home, and let you know. Thanks!

Cool, keep us posted...

How long has this been happening? And did you change any local system network settings?

If the problem occurred suddenly, and you didn't change any settings, then I think it's most likely a DNS problem. If entering the IP instead of the URL allows you to access Google, then it's almost certainly a DNS problem. If this turns out to be the case, then you'll have to wait for your service provider to fix it from the server side.

I feel like an idiot, since it has been happening for about 3 or 4 months. I forgot to mention that when I do google or askjeeves, the page it takes me to is owned by some other company. Like they have somehow stolen and rerouted my requests for those pages to theirs. Hope this helps somemore.

Hey RBC3 I have the exact same problem! This started about 2 months ago, I never changed any of the network settings so I'm guessing its the dns problem cyber was talking about.
When I type in www.google.com it takes me to a website from "Quick! Search Technology from New.net " When typing in the IP address cyber gave my google works. Its really frustrating not being able to use a search engine!

Thanks for that IP address Cyber, how would I find the IP address for yahoo?

thanks again!
