Default selfish=best

the topic about being an only child brought up this thought.

only child might grow up to be selfish. having siblings might help you grow up to know how to share and compromise.

of course, selfish sounds bad and the other sounds good.

but in my expereience, esp in the modern times, selfish people win over "nice" people ala nice guys finish last. selfish people seem to get more respect, they are not necessarily liked more. they aren't considerate towards others and they seem oblivious to it. ignorance can be bliss.

bottomline, self esteem can closely equal happiness. so would it be in the best interest of a parent to raise a child like so?

I don't think selfish people "win" over nice people and I for one certainly don't hold a lot of respect for selfish people. I think if you replaced "selfish" with driven, goal-oriented, even aggressive and replaced "nice" with passive, subordinate, overly unselfish, then I would probably agree with you. However, I don't think those two terms (selfish and nice, that is) accurately convey the message of your post.

Or I could be wrong. Disclaimer: This is just my 2 cents.

selfish people don't always get respect; worse comes to worse, selfish people tend to end up in the boardroom and fired for not being team players

Does not always work, but I try to be as unselfish as possible. My parents tried to teach us we are not the only people in the world.

At a gathering of say ten and I am kind of hungry, one piece of pizza left, I leave it there.

People rushing to the door to get the only PS3 in a christmas stampede, I'll hold the door, even if I want one.

The last seat on a train, you can have it.

Just way to many "me first" people. Go out in public and observe most people's behavior and watch how self absorbed it is, it will make you puke.

That does not mean I give everything I have to charity, everybody has some level of selfishness.

they don't win in the long run, you can't succeed by yourself. it's the people skills that will make you succeed.
