sell by date on bread?
so i buy bread once a week....for example i go to the grocery on aug 28th and the bread has a sell by date of sept 4th....i usually just chuck the bread if its sept 4th but today i havent had the time to go to the store how long can you eat bread until its sell by date??
The "sell by" date is just that, when it should be sold by, not necessarily when it needs to be used by. I'd say you're good for at least 2 days beyond the "sell by" date (if not more). Just take a good look & a good sniff. If you see or smell any funk, toss it!
The "sell by" date is the last date the maufacturer would like the bread sold, so as to guarantee freshness. I routinely keep whole wheat bread a week past the sell date, but I refrigerate the bread when I get it home from the store.
The time bread will remain edible depends on many factors, the type of flour, the moisture content, how much oil is used in the recipe, etc.
Some breads, specifically those that contain only flour, yeast, salt and water will only last a day before becoming stale.
If it tastes good to you, and isn't moldy, I wouldn't worry about it.
BTW, you can freeze half of the loaf when you get it home from the store, that way you will always have fresh bread available.
What brand of wheat bread do you buy?

You will see mold beginning to grow on bread about 3 weeks after the sell by date, if kept in a moist environment. Other than that it just dries out. The sell by date is not a use by date.

No mold = eat it.
Word. Even if it's stale, it's still good to make toast or a grilled cheese. There's no rule that says you gotta throw it out!PS - Can you tell I'm single?
