Should a High School get involved if someone gets caught underage drinking?
I got underage drinking (kegger in the woods) along with 30 other people back in 1986 or so...... the school didn't give two shits....... that was our own personal problem... pay a fine, attend a class and move on.....
Now the schools seem to want to suspend kids, etc........(like that entire chicago girls hazing thing).....
i don't see why the two are tied together..... what about speeding tickets? stop sign tickets? what if the student didn't brush his teeth and gets a cavity?
A local team is not going to "states" due to a handfull of kids getting caught drinking.... big deal... they are kids.... no one got hurt...they were just drinking (like we all used to)..

was the drinking age 18 back then, because thats a small violation (a few years) versus 5 or 6 year difference.
But it should not be the schools problem, as long as its not on school grounds, they shouldn't have any say....
unless its a private school where they have the kids sign a honor code or the such.

IMO the schools should have the authority to boot kids from extra curricular activities (which are privileges) if they're busted drinking or something similar. Suspend the little beasts if they've done something serious such as narcotics or violent behavior. Sure, parents have to be parents, but it's time to hold kids responsible for their own behavior.
What happened in Chicago resulted in the girls being charged with battery. The school was absolutely correct in expelling those students.

It really doesn't matter these days. It is a reflection upon the school and makes them look bad for having such kids at their school and they do not want these kids to be disruptive to other students at that school. This subject is controversial and will not be address for some time to come because of politics, religion, lawyers, parents and kids. Well, you get the idea, it is a freaking time bomb and no one is sure where to start. Once someone does, somebody else will complain which starts the cycle all over again.
