I have recently started kicking around the idea of getting an MBA after I graduate from undergrad, so I went in and talked to the head of my program today. She told me that an MBA will not add too much value unless it is from a top 5 program. I was a little discouraged, but she then told me that if I was interested, I had a pretty good chance of getting into a Harvard/Penn/Chicago type of program if I tried. Of course a big name MBA sounds great, but I am already lined up with a job that will pay six figures within five years of graduation, so I am trying to decide if it is worth it to pay the $80,000 to get my masters.

Any suggestions?

 

Uh...take the 6 figures and run.

Also, I believe most top tier MBA programs want you to work for some period of time before you go back to school.

 

A few of them, Harvard included, take a few students directly from undergrad.

 

My advice is you can never go wrong with high education!!!! You'll just have that edge over everyone else that didn't decide to go to Grad School. I say go for it, but make sure you're dedicated to it.

I would defintely consider it. Have you taken your GMATs and do you have a high GPA? If you go to Harvard then congrats...I think you will easily get your money back. After working a few years I decided to go back and get my MBA. I'm completing a top 20 program and I'm more than happy. Not only did I learn much, but the networking opportunities really paid off for me.
It also depends on what your job is. I was working in finance and I also did a few internships working in i-banking and w/ Mortgage-backed securities before I started the program.

 

if you are confident that a harvard MBA will help you to land a higher paying job, then yes it's worth it. if you are not, then no, it's not worth it.

 

A Harvard MBA will be great, but I think it's worth it to spend a few years in the workforce to gain some experience. The degree plus past jobs (provided they are relevant to business) will set you up very nicely after grad school.

 

^^^agreed. Your better off getting some work experience first. The MBA will be worth that much more to you. You need a break from scholastics to apply your intelligence in the real world. Then when you go back to school you can bring your work experience with you and apply it to the case studies in an MBA program.

Harvard MBA, you can't go wrong. It's not so much that this school provides a better education, instead it provides a better platform to network
