silly question...
Ok...I am 31 years old and while I usually grasp the concept of frequently used terms and "current" terminology...sometimes I am left scratching my head.
Owned / PWNT / OWN3D....ok...how did this get started? I think I understand the meaning of "someone >owning< you...or getting >owned< by something/someone...but...how/when/where/why did it turned to the others?
Also..."All your bass belongs to us"...WTF does this really mean? I see it once in a while in different boards...and I have to admit, on this one, I am absolutely clueless.
So...it is said there is no such thing as a stupid question...and it is better to ask a stupid question than to stay ignorant. I hope I am not the only one that is puzzled by these two...er...terms.
Thanks!!
Angel

I read somewhere that the "pwned" mis-spellings were common slang started by script-kiddies who just type too fast (p is next to o on the keyboard, same for 3 and e).
The "all your base" thing is from a lame English ("Engrish") translation of a line in a Japanese video game ("all your base belong to us"). The part I don't understand is, the game was lame so why the phenom? Anyway, I have a motorcycling shirt that reads "all your road belong to us" and hardly anyone 'gets it.'

the "all your base are belong to us" line was an extreme example of the incredibly bizarre Japanese-English translations endemic to gaming imports of the 80's and 90's.

The 3 and E thing is similar to using the number 7 for T, and 4 for A. As in 347 M3 (My personal favorite for a personalized plate, esp. if you own a certain BMW). It makes more sense when you inject the numbers into an 0th3rwi5e readab1e phra5e, to spice it up, so to speak. People often do it to lampoon the "script kiddie" mentality, or AIM/IRC users who think they are 1337 i.e. people who do this without any sense of mockery. Similar to writing "that rokzors!!!111oneoneoneeleventyeleven11!" It is ~similar~ to writing "C U L8R", or "got 2 go", but not the same thing, i.e. it isn't shorthand.
Internet Culture 110 will now break for lunch. When we come back, we will discuss the significance of intentionally using "teh" in place of "the."

I have a t-shirt that says "All your Oil are belong to U.S." I love the look on peoples faces when they can't figure it out. But even better is the look of the few people who actually know what it means.

What is scary is that I was only able to get about 90% of it...the rest...right over my head!
