Socal vs East Coast
And I didn't do anything special other than treat them respectfully; it's the little things like putting your keys on the dash so they aren't worried about you speeding away, interior lights on so they can see you move as they approach and a 'good morning/day/evening officer/sir/maam how can I help you?' goes a long way.

You will never be on your death bed and say, "Boy, I wish I never moved to California!" But you may be on your death bed and say, "Boy, I wish I took more risks and enjoyed life more."
I say for for it. If you decide in a year or so that the rat race isn't worth it, you can always move back. There's no shame in trying something new and realizing it isn't for you.

I've lived on both coasts and much prefer the Northeast. Cali is beautiful, for sure. Great weather - San Diego's is the best in the country. However, I found the culture too laid-back and the people, while nice, more than a little superficial. Seems like a strange complaint, and just my opinion - no offense to the Cali folks

Raleigh is a beautiful area. So is Carlsbad. Too many snow geese there these days for my taste. SoCal used to be laid back. Too many folk have moved there from the north east for my liking also. They brought along all their silly restrictive mind sets and laws and ruin it for the folk who liked it just as it was. Next thing you know they will be licensing surfers and wanting to measure their methane once a year; they already killed SoCal's custom car industry with emissions laws. So, 6 of one or half a dozen of another as far as folk go. Weather is better in Carlsbad. SoCal traffic can be murder until you learn the back streets and when and when not to go on the freeway. LA has lots of posers and superficial folk towards the beach cities. Carlsbad isn't as bad.
I just had a long discussion with my wife about moving the family to the SanFran bay area for a job opportunity. We both love the area, but the prices of real estate is so astronomical that it made the discussion moot. A 3 bedroom house for $700k is just too outrageous. Even with the bump in pay ($150k) at least 1/2 of my net pay would be sunk into real estate expense. If I was single, it would have been a no-brainer, I would be typing this message from Cali right now.
