Solar eclipse
Saturday, we're off to Puerto Vallarta to see and shoot the annular eclipse on Monday. Unlike a total eclipse, an annular eclipse occurs when the moon is further from the
to the distance of the sun. Consequently, the moon's disc does not quite cover the sun's disc at maximum eclipse and a very thin ring of the sun's disc remains. "Annulus"is Latin for "ring," hence an annular eclipse. This will occur just before the sun sets in the Pacific Ocean. It should be quite spectacular, weather permitting.
Mrs. Raptor and I are eclipse chasers. This will be our 6th. The others were in Roundup, Montana (about 50 miles north of Billings), Cabo San Lucas, Catalina Island (off LA), Aruba, and Munich.
A nice partial will be visible in many places, as follows (local time for first contact and obscuration, which is ther percent of the sun's disc eclipsed:
LA - 5:13 PM, 71%
San Francisco - 5:06 PM, 65%
Chicago - 7:28 PM, 19%
Denver - 6:21 PM, 40%
Seattle - 5:02 PM, 37%
Phoenix - 5:19 PM, .65
Honolulu - 1:04 PM, 41%
Tokyo - 6:42 AM, 34%
Always use safe eye protection when viewing, or permanent eye damage, even blindness, can quickly result. I use #5 neutral density filters to see through a telescope and shoot, which cuts the light down 100,000 times. A #4 neutral density filter, which cuts down the light 10,000 times, will also work.

Luke-
Most definitely. I sort of invented this device that mounts a 35 MM camera and 600 MM telephoto lens in parallel wiith a 1000 MM telescope with separate slow motion controls. In addition we will view through 9x63 astronomical binocs.
My photos will be on film, so I'll have to scan before I post.
I'm getting really excited about this. We have to rent a jeep and go 65 KM south of town through jungle on dirt roads to get to the centerline, where the eclipse will be maximum. According to the link I posted, the local villagers "find tourists to be a novelty."
You should get about 45% in Portland.
