Some one opened my Credit card bill
So I got home and my bills open in my mail box, someone sent it to the wrong box.........well feeling like my privacy has been snatched I call up my company, chase. The guy at first is like dont worry its not a big deal and im like smeone can use my account # and maybe even buy shit online, im sure its easy to do and he finalyl was likeyeh thats a good idea. So was I paranoid or am I justified for reporting my card as stolen?
you're just being paranoid. obviously, the person that your bill was mistakenly sent to openned it assuming it was his/her bill and did not realize it till he/she started looking at the bill. it's an innocent error, which i'm sure a lot of us have done at one point or another in their lives. if this person really wanted to use your credit card info, he probably would had just taken down the info, throw away the bill, and make some purchases before you even realize your bill never arrived. nevertheless, credit card and bank statements have been sent via mail for as long as i can remember. if it is so easy to use the info on those statements to commit fraud or identity theft, then it would had been a huge publicized issue already. apparently, it requires more than just your name, mailing address, and credit card number to make purchases.
I get mail for someone with the same house number as mine, but on a different mile road quite a bit, we're a rural route and the same mail carrier delivers both places (9 times out of 10 it's a substitute carrier). I don't open their mail, and I haven't gotten any mail that was opened by them. I don't automatically open mail without reading who it's addressed to, always have. It's also an easy way to cull out junk mail. If a piece of my mail were to come opened I'd raise holy hell about it if it were sensitive mail, i.e. CC statement, bank statement.

I checked my account once and had $8500 in internet purchases I did not make. It is wise to be careful.
