You all are missing the brilliance of her message. She was using herself as an example (being a product of SC schools - IIRC, generally ranked in the lowest 10% nationwide) as to why 1/5th of Americans can't find the US on a map. 
But seriously...
I short, she choked. It happens to all of us once in a while. It just sucks she did it on national TV. Whether she just miss-heard the question or fumbled on her words, she just choked. So while the media is having a small field day with this, it's really a shame that people are much more worked up over her goof-up than the fact that 20% of us can't locate our own country on a map.
