Well, I don't want the monthly payment, but the major reason is I just hate em. Every time I am walking around in the middle of a conversation with someone they hold up a finger and say "Hold on a second." And reach into their pocket for a vibrating phone. Or they have some totally annoying ringtone. Or they are snapping cell phone pics of stupid sh*t. Or they are talking really loud while in line at Chipotle with one finger in their ear.
I just don't want to turn into that guy.

I minimize all the concerns I have by not giving my number out to, well, anyone really. Anyone who calls can leave a VM or call back again if it's important for me to answer, otherwise I'm not above ignoring a call if I'm hanging with some friends (or driving).
Right now, I pay $45/month for unlimited txts, 450 anytime mins, and insurance on my Voyager... In all honesty, it's probably only $10-15/month more than I'd pay for a home phone with long distance service - and since I work nights, text messages are far more convenient than phone calls for communicating with my friends.
I do my best to keep my bills low. I refuse to pay for cable, so I just watch my movies (over and over again) or find a good book to read, or just sleep... I keep the thermostat set low and use a heavy comforter if it's cold, or dress more warmly, etc. I have Verizon FiOS for my internet and I chose the lowest cost package they offered (didn't offer anything but FiOS at my location), so I think I pay maybe $45/mo for internet.
Only places I really splurge are:
insurance on the S...been too close to being burned too many times to skimp there...
I pay more for rent than I really have to so that I can have a 2bd apt with an attached garage to myself...
I have a Gold's Gym membership that costs me about $40/mo more than one of the other local gyms (but I get to use Gold's when I travel and I like the atmosphere more). Hopefully I'll have a 2nd job at Gold's in the near future and I'll not have to pay for my membership...
I can't bring myself to spend huge sums of money on going out. That's part of why I don't party/drink too much... I always tell my friends that if they want to get drunk for $100, they can give me the cash and I'll go buy them a $35 bottle of whatever they want to drink or a case (or two) of beer and keep the change for myself, lol...
