Own the skies with what? The MIG-29? Not quite. Both the F-15 and F-16 will out manuever the MIG-29. There is only one fighter in the world that will out manuever just about everything we have less the Raptor or the JSF and that's the SU-37 Flanker. Besides its manueverability, its got rearward looking radar and the AA-11 Archer missile, which can be fired on aircraft coming up behind it. That missile can pull 12g's and do a 180 turn. We have the AIM-9X now though which supposedly has the same capability. I don't think the Soviets have the $$$ to adequately train pilots or support their air force like we can. If there was one air force that would give us a run for our money, it'd be China's.
If only Steve would learn some manners, people would be more prone to believe him when he's right. My understanding is that the Mig-29 is aerobatically on par with the F-15 and 16. The Su-35/37 (and the Su-47 Berkut, above) are superior aerobatic platforms. However, generally speaking our planes are maintained better, our pilots are better, and our electronic warfare support is vastly superior to our adversaries'. The F-22 should help bridge the maneuverability gap, but it still has only 2-D thrust vectoring, as opposed to 3-D on the Sukhoi's. The combat benefit there is perhaps questionable, but in theory those planes are capable of stuff our planes aren't. Nobody else has super-cruise or stealth though, so at least we're ahead there .
