RED MX5, Actually, I'm a writer, not a teacher. I remember the 135s too. (Looked an awful lot like a 707 ) You're right about the dedication of the folks behind the program. (And, like yourself, all the tanker crews, technicians, and other service personnel who supported it as well)

You were supposed to think it was a brand new plane in 1971, That was part of the subterfuge. Truth is, it was quite a grizzled veteran by then. The aircraft actually dates back to the 50s!

I can't really talk more about my experience w/ the 71, which is why I left it open for the others. Although much has been declassified, there

Kinda cool how it totally leaked fuel while cold.....the heat of the friction caused the plates to expand, sealing the fuselage....or something lke that...

Yes this was a great plane and I somewhat dont understand why its out of commission. However, the plane was very problematic with fuel (chugged it really) and the pilots were required to wear space suits instead of the standard g-suits. Its not a pretty bird but it literally was faster than a bullet, and was untouchable making it an awesome recon plane.

F-22 = . We've spent so much money on that plane and have rarely used its "capabilities". It barely carries any weapons making it an unreasonable fighter (sure its got stealth and speed but thats only when it didnt open its weapons bay, which is the whole point of a damn FIGHTER jet). If it was so good, why are they still using A-10 Warthogs in Iraq right now?

Well here is my story regarding the SR-71,

I live in a small town of 5000 in Texas with a small airport. I am 17 right now and a Junior in High School. Back in 7th grade we had a visitor come to our school, my science class went to listen. This mystery visitor told us all about her flying this plane and a slide show about it. Cool stuff but just something to get out of class. I really enjoyed it though as I was into space back then. I stayed late and got the attached photo of her with her autograph. She regulary comes to our small airport to fly her plane and do stunts for fun. I am now realizing what a remarkable person she is. It turned out to be Marta Bohn-Meyer, the first female crewmember of the SR-71 back in 1992 I believe. I now feel very privleged to have met her and look forward to her coming to town again. Awesome plane!

I'm in love with this aircraft too. The best part is that while we know it is capable of Mach 3.3, the top speed is still classified. Badass.
