You guys missed out. I took out a "mortgage" and bought a F40 with it. I haven't made 1 payment and still drive my F40 every day. The girls dig it and I just found out that the government is paying for it... W00000000000H00000000000

[QUOTE=vtec9,Jul 18 2008, 10:05 AM] debt consolidation is a horrible idea.

ok, that's good. what I was referring to was actually 'debt settlement', which has erroneously been lumped under the name of consolidation.

The funny (maybe slightly morbid) thing is, by the time my parents die and pass on everything they have to my brother and me, neither of us will likely need it because we'll be fine on our own so it'll be a substantial supplement that I'll do with as I see fit.
Unless of course they get sick and spend their entire life's savings in heatlth care and nursing homes. It's happens all the time to the people my wife deals with. Don't count on anything from your parents or social security is my motto.

Yeah absolutely, that stuff is garbage.

They'll begin to accept your payments, then wait for you to default on the loan completely, then cross their fingers that your lending institution is willing to negotiate a settlement for less than you owe so that the debt settling company can keep the difference between what you pay and what your bank accepts.

Fact is, by calling your institution yourself, you can often get your interest rates reduced if it's apparent that you've been paying only the interest, or less than even that for a period of time. Kind of a preemptive effort on your part to come to an agreement with them and you don't need to pay a third party to do it for you after the worst has happened and your credit has turned to crap for missing 6 payments.

That created a sense of entitlement whereby I've never been willing to sacrifice or deprive myself of something I've wanted. I'm getting it all back on track now but that's only through working really damn hard and making some changes.

As we speak I'm waiting for a call back to sign some papers on some debt consolidation (which is obviously in the best interest of everyone, including the lender as I would go on for probably 15 years without paying back any principle and just covering interest).

I've made some definite mistakes but I really don't expect someone to swoop in and pay off my debts. The funny (maybe slightly morbid) thing is, by the time my parents die and pass on everything they have to my brother and me, neither of us will likely need it because we'll be fine on our own so it'll be a substantial supplement that I'll do with as I see fit. Maybe I'll do something nice for some people who deserve it, not people looking for a hand-out because they screwed themselves over.
+1

I went to college trying to keep a similar lifestyle. Which wasnt spoiled before, but was definitely better than your average college student. I also bought my Prelude freshmen year. For the first 3 years of college, I worked my ass off, full time, and school full time. Paid 95 percent of bills with no debt. But it got out of hand the last 2 years.

But Im doing everything I can to work it off, and I CERTAINLY dont expect people to pay for my debt and/or mistakes.

Vote democrat!!! That way, they can take your hardearned money, and although they know it's worthless, they will try to bail out all the people who thought they were smart by playing with money they didn't have.
