STUPID ASIAN restaurants!!!
I'm so sick and tired of most of Asian restaurants taking advantage of their waiters and waitresses. As some of you may know, OWNERS of 90% of all Asian (esp. Chinese and Vietnamese) restaurants take 100% of tips from their waiters and waitresses.
My family and I just went to a couple of Vietnamese restaurants this weekend, and at the end of each meal, we always talked about how these owners take 100% tips from the waiters and waitresses. Once, even a waiter himself told us not to leave any tips for him because it would've gone directly into the filthy rich owner's pocket. The restaurants were filled with white people, and each one of them would leave like 15% for tips, and all those tips would've gone straight into those filthy rich owners' pockets. From tips alone, it's enough to make them rich, because their restaurants are almost always full, esp on holidays. Yes, they are filthy rich, my sister knows them. They own quite a few restaurants and shops, and each of them has like a thousand houses.
I'm sick of these filthy, dirty bastards taking advantage of the hard-labored waiters and waitresses. I wonder if there's something I could do about it. Perhaps report them to some agency or something.
*Note to you people: whenever and if you go to an Asian restaurant, think twice about tipping. Ask the waiters/waitresses directly to see if they could keep the tips or it'll go to the owners. Don't make those filthy, dirty, cheap bastards any richer than they already are and deseve to be.

umm i hope you aren't saying all asian resturants do this... cuz that would be a gross generalization. this is true however, many resturants do this the owners take a percentage and split the rest throughout its workers.
Well, I'm not saying all, because I haven't been to ALL Asian restaurants. But the ones I've been to, they do this.
No, no, no. I'm not even saying that owners would take the tips and divide amongst the waiters (that would be just fine), I'm talking about just taking 100% of the tips and put them in their wallets.
My sister knows too well about this sort of thing.

If I were in So Cal, I'd meet up and kick your ass. How serious I am about it.
hm...my friends all own restaurants, and i know that they don't do that to their workers...i've actually never heard of this situation before.
although...i do have a complaint about asian (especially chinese) businesses. they think that just because you work for them, they're allowed to order you around like they own you. if you work at an american business, you do strictly what your job requires of you, not vacuum the carpet, take out the trash, pick up your boss' passport, water theirr plants and get their mail when they're out of town. i walked into work this morning, and found my co-worker vacuuming...other time, my boss asked me to sweep their floor. no, our jobs are no the janitors, but just because they're paying us for our time, does that give them the right to tell us to do chores such as those???

purdyS2K is right. Not in all, but in MOST, Asian joints, especially where the staff and owners are FOB, this is normal. It's how it's done at home and they keep it up here, except that I think in Asia the patrons don't tip as often as it is accepted here.
The problem is really that most of these employees are illegal and they have no choice in the matter. They are lucky that the owner gives them a job and does not report them. That's why they are being abused like that.
It sucks, but I am not sure which action would hurt them more, reporting the whole problem to the authorities (in which case they get deported) or simply not leaving a tip, in which case they get fired and replaced with a waiter who does bring in tips.
The best way that I have seen done is: if you have a favorite place that you go to often and know some of the waiter (and they speak English or you speak their language), you can agree to give them their tip later at a local store or something like that. I had a friend who would tip his waiters in a Chinese Mall in China town. They would meet there and he would give them a week or two weeks worth of tips. But this is a rare case b/c my friend had gotten to know the family of the waiter and all that.
Otherwise, I don't know what is the right thing to do for them.
