tax question: 1098-T (tuition credit)

I figured it out. It gave me money for the American opportunity credit rather than doing the tuition fees/deductions

I had an ethical dilemma last year. My company paid 100% of graduate school tuition, but I still received a 1098-T in the mail. I definitely stopped and thought about taking a tax credit on it. But alas, better judgement made the right decision.

When i entered in my 1098-t i didn't notice any increase or decrease in my tax return amount, What gives?

I'm pretty sure you can take the credit as long as you are not claimed as a dependent on parents return.

Right, but if your parents are paying your tuition, chances are they're claiming you as a dependent. I'd check into that.

not always true.

but there's a real easy way to check if your parents are claiming you as a dependent.....
