Canon makes the only truly broadcast quality MiniDV video camera http://www.canondv.com/xl1/index2.html
Also you can't put the coolpix in your pocket. The S100 is the size of a pack of cigarettes. That was the main draw for me. I wanted to be able to carry it around with me where I go.
BTW Good Guys is selling it for $499 according to the catalog I just received.
FlyingPig... did you use the macro setting for those shots of your little furry friend?
I think macro would produce a better clarity...
Not a criticism BTW
Wait till you get the hang of the stitch assist function. It's great..
A largish sample here...

You get a great depth of field with a digital camera.

I didn't figure out how to turn the macro setting on.
I had to hold it pretty far.
Even them, it didn't seem to focus well.
I need to turn on that macro.
As far as the stitch goes, that was the first thing I tried.
I loved it.
I have a quicktime vr mov of my room.
I love the 360 degree view.
Too bad s2000 is too small for it....maybe I will try it.

I have tried coolpix950 and coolpix990.
Both cameras had very good quality. That is very typical of Nikon. However, neither were any better than s10 or s100. (much better than s20....s20 simply sucks)
Coolpix, however, has that swinging design, and I didn't like to feel a part of the "expensive" camera dangling.
coolpix990's extra $$ is not worth it since I have absolutely no need for the resolution.
Coolpix950 was on my list, but I picked s10 over it (wish s10 had 3X optical zoom)
When I read about S100 earlier this year, I decided to wait for it.
As far as the CCD is concerned, I think both s10 and coolpix950 take about the same picture. I'm glad I got the s100 though. It really grows on me. It's wonderfully tiny!!!

The S100 rocks!! I wanted a very compact digi-cam because I never bothered to lug around my standard 35MM... and it's pretty compact, itself. LOVE the S100. Just be sure to get a bigger CF card and you're good to go. Don't worry about these Nikon snobs

I bought an S100 last week from www.buydig.com for about $430 with shipping, it came in 2 days. As far as CF cards, if you're a Costco member I saw 64MB cards at the one here for $100.
