Just now I decided to have AIM on whilst at work... just so I could feel in touch with the world etc. Instead, I got in touch with the dregs of humanity: (Note, all expletives have been abbreviated).

J/K, there's always idiots on AIM. In fact, they're everywhere on the internet. If the person hassles you like this, just block them from IM'ing you again. I'm not on AIM that much for that reason. I haven't gotten personal attacks like that, but I always get the "what's the best intake for my car". 
I have a stock one... HELLO!!!! You can also limit the people who can contact you (and see if you're online) to those in your buddy list.
