Default things you should never do (a rant on my insurance company)

* Never tell them the truth.
* Never try to save yourself a dollar.
* Never try to save yourself sometime.
* Never try to save them any money.
* Don't even bother asking them to help with your losses. They are losses because they are losses. And when it rains, it pours.
* Insurance companies are like the mob - you pay them money because you have to, yet when they are there for your protection, they aren't really there.
* Oh, and I almost forgot, NEVER insure your car with State Farm.

I keep my car cover on, with towels just by the holes - last night it poured rain, my interior is soaked regardless. The leather might turn out ok, but the cushions are screwed.

Today, the insurance company called me into a "meeting" of sorts and I received only one check (so far, maybe more to come) - its enough for:
a) a replacement top
b) 6.5 hours of labor to replace the top

Anyone know who can do this in 6.5 hours?

Anyone want to buy me a beer?

Call John David and ask him who to talk to at the state insurance board. The economy here sucks, but one benefit of living in the state capital is having the offices of the state board right down the street. USE THEM!

I know in Oregon you can legally take a car to any repair shop you want. If there is anything similar to that in Texas, I would suggest getting a quote from a shop you like and make them pay for it even if it's more than their original offer.

btw, just a note - I've been with State Farm since I had a permit at age 15, now age 28. Never had a claim with them before.

I have nothing but great things to say about State Farm. They paid my claim very promptly and did not give any trouble to the body shop on the estimate. When you are deciding where to take your car you need to interview the shop and ask them if they have dealt with your State Farm adjuster in the past and how they have worked together. If the shop is reputable they will not do half ass work, the adjuster should know this and based on the shop's credibility approve any estimate submitted. Just a thought...

Although State Farm is my employer's main competitor, the insurance company is not to blame. If you are looking for vengence, take a look at your specific Claim Administrator and the Claim Adjuster.

I'm pretty sure with your situation, Schatten, you were put into an "audit" category....maintain, and follow through on all your claims and their adjustments.

If they continue a denial, make sure you get a notarized statement of why they denied your claim. Your next step after getting that statement is towards legal recourse.

You've been with them a long time and they're treating you like sh!t. That's just not right. It might be time to complain to a insurance board, like Sondra suggests.

I guess I've been lucky with State Farm. Every claim I've ever made has been taken care of with little or no hassle. I have found it helps if you've also got your homeowner's with them as well.
