they can as long as the water doesn't corrode circuit traces and what not. If you dry it quickly, most components will survive.

What was that they used the first time in the jug? It wasn't water, was it? Why did they clean it off? Was it some kind of non-conductive liquid? If it were water, I would think it'd short the motherboard out instantly.

distilled water is de-ionized and won't short out the traces as ions are needed to conduct electicity. water eventually ionizes so the distilled stuff at the grocer probably won't work. Oils and such are non-conductive, maybe that's what was used.

I was about to say...de-ionized water is not that bad for circuitry. My brother dropped his new Sony -Erricson cameraphone into a drink. Bourbon and Coke I believe. Bad news... He washed with distilled water (from the store) and it works fine now.
