tips on dvd recorders- set top units vs pc units
ok, for all intents and purposes, assume i am a hobbyist and not a copyright infringer. i am trying to get information regarding dvd recording equipment. basically, i know that u can get a dvdr for ur pc such as the pioneer ao6, which i hear is pretty good, and make pretty good copies of dvds, and with the right software can get movies, ususally ripped of all the extras.
however, i also hear that the settop units, which were crazy expensive a few years ago, can pretty much do 1 to 1 copies, and has editing features which can create menus and such. for example, i have a dvd that is only 40 minutes in length, so that means i can fit 2 of these 40 min dvds on one blank dvdr, i can also create a menu which enables me to choose which i want to view
now, please tell me if all that i have said is true, because i have been to a lot of the sites out there and they are very confusing, telling me to get this and that. i need someones opinion, preferable a self proclaimed guru to point me in the right direction

I'm as far from a guru as possible, but I have a Pioneer DVR-105, and I'd imagine you can use a PC unit with editing software to do the same things (i.e. create menus and such) the standalone units do.
As far as 1:1 copies, my impression is that the limiting factor in copying movies is storage space - movie DVDs can hold up to over 8 GB, while blank DVD discs have a capacity of 4.7 GB. I don't know if there's any difference between the PC and standalone units here.
Keep in mind that this is a pretty uneducated opinion. I have never made or copied a movie personally. Now, if you'd like to know how about burning video games, then let me know.
