Default Tips to hair stylest.... necessary?

Every 2 weeks or so when I get my haircut.. I usually give the person who cuts hair like 2 dollars for tip. But I've been noticing that when I'm waiting for my turn, I see others give tips also but after the person leaves, the hair stylest doesn't seem to care for the extra tip(they just toss the money on the table). I'm wondering if I should stop giving them tips if they don't really care. When I give them tips, they usually say "thanks" but also I think they don't really care.. Do you guys tip them after haircut?

I give tips, and they always smile and say thank you. They greet me by name too whenever I come back.

Let's think about this: you don't tip them, they notice, and they lose their reason to keep you happy enough to come back. The next time you go in, does it come as a huge surprise when you walk out with TIGHTWAD shaved into the back of your head? I'm just kidding, but it DOES pay to keep happy the ones who keep you looking good...

you should leave a tip... trust me... they'll remember you. especially if you leave a nice tip. they may not seem to care but they'll remember. and try to stick to the same person...

I've been going to the same place for something like 15 years now - I always give the same tip each time. It's not big, but I do it every time and they do appreciate it. Then again, they slip it in their pocket so I guess they "show" appreciation more. They also thank me. Think about it - if they do five haircuts an hour and get just a dollar tip each time, they're making an extra $200 a week just from tips (which in turn means an extra $10K+ per year)! It adds up, bigtime.

hell yeah, if you want them to cut your hair "right" next time!
$18 for a wash and cut. I always tip $5.00 for the service. It really does help since I can actually walk in and get it done! Never had to wait. Don't need to make a reservation at all. They know me by name and really do take care of me. So it does pay to tip.

Please excuse the cultural gap but it's interesting that you feel the need to tip your hairdresser. Tipping is not normally done here in Oz as minimum wages are guaranteed and tips are not needed to obtain good service. I thought that only waitresses and other lowly paid occupations in the US necessitated getting tips to make up for a shortfall in the hourly rate of income? Just out of curiosity how much per year would the average American consumer spend on tips (or save if they didn't tip)?

Muz,

It all depends on how much you eat out, take a taxi, get your hair cut, etc. The wife & I don't eat out that much, nor do we take taxi's anywhere....so we probably don't spend as much as say, someone who lives in a larger city, & needs to use a taxi more often. It all depends on your lifestyle.
