Default Tired of renting my cable modem, any recommendations?

I need a good, reliable modem that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. I only have 1 PC, it's a desktop, and I'm not interested in wireless capability. I've been looking at US Robotics, what do you guys think?

USR (3com) Makes a good modem. I have had the best luck with Motorolas cable modems though. I worked for Comcast for a while doing high speed internet installs and we never had a problem with the motorolas. Check Best Buy or places like that, a lot of times you can get them on sale and with rebates. It is no problem to add your personal modem to the account, just call your provider and give them the Make, Model number, MAC address and the serial number of the modem and they can provision it in about 60 seconds.

Yeah, for a while Best Buy had really good deals on their Linksys and Motorola modems. With all the mail-in rebates I got with my modem pruchase, I actually ended up getting 50 buck more back than I spent. That, my friend, is what I call excellent.

I believe he's talking about cable modems, not routers.

I have the Linksys cable modem and it's worked great. It's already paid for itself since I bought it in January.

I picked up a motorola "surfboard" 5100 last week, works great so far, plugged it in and it works. Be sure to buy one with DOCSIS 2.0, (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification), which defines interface requirements for cable modems involved in high-speed data distribution over cable television system networks.
