Agreed, it is pretty fascinating! I still find it amazing that we unearth bits of the people who lived in the same places we did, and all led lives of their own, hundreds to thousands of years before now.

I remember seeing something on the tube a year or so back documenting the excavation of the remains of at least one gladiator. The evidence pointed to a strong but somewhat corpulant figure as a gladiator. The reason for the extra weight would be that wounds to fatty tissue would bleed less and be less debilitating than one that cut through muscle tissue,
