People are invited to dress up as their favorite contestant; i.e., as a rock, as a piece of paper, or as a pair of scissors.

"It's a complete travesty that not many people take it seriously."
How can anyone take it seriously? Regardless of what you chose, there are 3 outcomes - win, tie, or lose. It's completely random (though I'm sure magician will find a way to show it isn't ).

A good RPS player will watch films of his competitors to learn whether they have exploitable trends in their execution. Knowing that after a scissors-scissors-rock sequence there is a 40% chance that their next volley will be rock, 35% that it will be paper, and only 25% that it will be scissors represents an advantage the importance of which can hardly be overstated. Psychological training deserves every bit the emphasis that physical training now enjoys.

Apart from that it's just a stupid game.

And what if you had never seen that competitor before? Back to 1 in 3.

1.5 in 3. Ties, I believe, do not count as losses.

All I can say is that I have never been prouder to be Canadian.. You Yankees can have your "Olympics", but we show our true colours in the more challenging sports
