Body of missing man found in desert ravine
College of the Canyons employee missing since Oct. 17

SANTA CLARITA -- A Canyon Country man who had been missing for more than a month was found dead in a Mojave Desert ravine, apparently of suicide, a Kern County coroner's official said Thursday.

Kern County sheriff's investigators discovered the body of Ian Harte about noon Wednesday near Horned Toad Road, 3 miles west of State Route 58, said Margaret Soliz, a senior secretary at the Kern County Coroner's Office.

Harte, who just turned 24 last month, apparently died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, Soliz said. Also recovered was his red Jeep Wrangler.

Harte, who worked in the information technology department at College of the Canyons for two years, had been missing since Oct. 17, just a day after his birthday. His family had initiated a search three days later after he missed work.

"He was a valuable member of the computer support staff and contributed his extensive technical knowledge and wonderful sense of humor to his department and to the entire college family," college spokeswoman Sue Bozman said. "He was the type of person who would drop everything to help someone in need and did so with great professionalism and care. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him."
