Machu Pichu is on my dream trip list although the wife wants Italy this year so it will have to wait.

I would say try that one. You can do it cheaply or you can do it delux, just research it enough. The views are stunning (as I have heard from many friends who have seen it) and it is a once in a lifetime thing that is best done before you lose the ability to climb around in the altitude.

Liesure is a passing fancy, adventure is something the body is not always able, but is remembered for a lifetime. In other words, you can have liesure when you are old and grey, but may long for the adventures you let pass you by.

Make sure you have enough money in the bank to do whatever you will need to do. Just remember that adventure creates a risk associated high. You might laugh now but the only way to enjoy the next one is to step it up. My last vacation was riding a sport bike to the arctic circle and back from Texas and I'd rather shoot myself than sit on some boring beach in Mexico for a week.

Machu Picchu is wonderful! We took the train along the Urubamba River to the base of a cliff, then a bus up a 13 switchback road to the top. You can't see it until you get there. When you first see it you can really appreciate why Hiram Bingham called it "The Lost City of the Incas" when he discovered it in 1911. Peru has many other great attractions, including jungle trips up the Peruvian Amazon and its tributaries. I bartered with a Yagua indian chief for a blowgun.

What's dangerous about being in Vietnam? Crimes? Crimes can happen in any country if you happen to be in troublesome spots; and actually, Vietnam has some of the lowest crime rates. I'm not Vietnamese but have been there twice; loved the beaches and resorts there. I liked it much better than Thailand too.
On the screen I typed vietnam..in my head I was thinking Korea, sorry about that.

But the ripped-off if you're white (& american) part is true in many countries.

Partner? Is that a girlfriend that has a business relationship as well, or what?

Macchu Pichu would be my choice. You can have fun, relaxation and adventure while going somewhere stunning that isn't a beach or typical resort.

So Im in a bind.

My partner and I are trying to plan a vacation and are in complete disagreement as to where/what. I'll try to make it as fair as possible and get some outside opinions.

Trip ideas have boiled down to these two:

A: Puerto Rico, Mexico, Virgin Islands -

Pros: Lesiurely, nice 4/5 star hotel, nightlife, scenery, affordable.

Cons: Generic, forgetable and too similar to where we live now (Tampa/St Pete/Clearwater)

B: Vietnam, Peru, Brazil

Pros: Adventureous, memorable, historical and educational (think HaLong bay, Macchu Pichu, Corcovado),

Cons: Travel can be difficult/uncomfortable, expensive
i have been to all places you listed in B, and i can say that while they can be uncomfortable (depending where youre coming from) and "difficult" (language barrier), they are in no way expensive.

aside from airfare vietnam is dirt cheap. peru is cheap to get to and to get around. brazil is moderate in cost, but certainly lower than any western-targeted resort destinations.

it all depends on your personal style, though. ive been to 20-something countries. dont see myself going on any resort vacations for another 20+ years. as a gift for vacation i bought my parents cruise tickets. so it depends on you more than anything
