Almost any new TV will be HD. And of course which is better is subjective, so you need to go check them out yourself. And good luck finding one for 1k.

I brought a SONY 42" Rear Projection LCD HDTV a few months ago and couldn't be happier with it. Excellent quality, excellent picture.

BTW, to get something decent, be prepared to spend more than $1,000.

DLP. I have a Samsung 46" DLP. Love it. Great picture quality, and half the price of a good 42" LCD/Plasma.

I would do your homework before purchasing, though. Read up as much as you can about burn in on plasma, bulb replacement on DLP, and any other issues so that you aren't caught off guard with whatever purchase you make.

There are three types of HD projection televisions: DLP, LCD and Plasma. I conducted a lot of research before I purchased a DLP set (Toshiba 52HMX94). The Sonys look particularly good, but are more expensive than the rest.

I recommend you check out the DLP and LCD HD sets. The Plasmas have a lot of reliability problems.

Here are some places to look in your research:

good luck,

For a little less than $1000 you can get a panasonic or samsung 30 inch widescreen "tube" tv with internal hdtv terrestrial decoder. Not a bad set but as bulky as a regular tv.

I like plasma but they are way more expensive than you want to spend. Especially for a good one. LCD is NOT the way to go in my opinion. My GF just bought one, and while they can have a decent picture, they all tend to be kind of dark and viewing angle is VERY key depending on the set. If you are at a bad angle the picture will look goofy (easy do demonstrate if you have any laptops handy) and I am constantly adjusting the stand depending on whether I am on the couch, the floor, etc. If you have a setup where you will be on a couch looking pretty close to straight on, they can have a great picture. DLP's are good sets but generally a little more expensive than $1000. Mitsu makes a nice 47 inch.

My recommendation for dish is DirecTV, crappy customer service but good channels for the price.

If you want to stay at $1000 I would go with the tube recommendation, it will not be huge or have the hang-on-the-wall ability but provides a good picture and over the air HD included for a good price. Entry level "flat" technology tv's don't tend to have as nice a picture as the expensive ones and I think it is a waste to spend $1500 to $2000 and have a picture that does not look that great. My two cents says if you want to stay low price, dont go for the flat look flash, but get a nice set that comes at a good price. Otherwise for 42inch flat sets, the real good ones start at over $2500. Can't go wrong with the pioneer elite plasma for still around $10k. For most big screens, I am partial to Mitsubishi and Sony for picture quality and durability.

4.) CRT rear-projection(still the best value)

Agreed. I have a CRT 55 inch Mitsu that is the size of a fridge but has an excellent picture and can be had for less than $2500. My neighbor has a mitsu 70 inch crt rear projection and although huge, it is unreal. A bigger room helps.

I was in love with my CRT too, but guys, watch a football game in HD, and you drool all over the place. C'mon over.

CRT rear-projection HDTVs have been available since the late 90's.
