That is the start of something very very very wrong.

It's easy to see where this is going and how it will be used to further destroy personal freedom...but I can't say I'm surprised.

The war on terrorism is accelerating the trend toward surveliance and social control and poses a major problem: where do we draw the line?

I would hope that something like this could be used to a positive end and that limitations could be put in place to prevent misuse. I would love to see it used to reunite parents with snatched children by scanning every child at the beginning of every school year to verify that the child is who the "parents" say it is (prevents one parent from taking the kid from the other parent, having the kid assume a new name, and go to school undetected?). Obviously, the benefits for Alzheimer's patients are immeasurable...

This would also take the place of a medical bracelet, should one be lost. How many times have you heard of someone suffering a massive allergic reaction to a drug? I'm allergic to several drugs with various adverse reactions, but there would be nothing apparent to let a doctor know that if I was unable to speak for myself.

Imagine if we chipped convicts when they were put in jail! I remember a case not long ago in Florida where an ex-con had just been involved with the shooting death of his girlfriend's son. When the police came and took him for questioning, he claimed to be someone else (in hopes of being let go, since there were warrants out for his arrest for other violent crimes) and because the person he claimed to be had no criminal record and wasn't perceived as a threat, he was handcuffed inappropriately, managed to escape, and killed 3 or 4 more cops before he killed himself. Imagine if they could have scanned him when they picked him up and known who he was immediately!

While I agree this could be used inappropriately, I also think that it could be used to the greater good, much like the chips that are implanted in my pets. Just my $.02...

10/4....Just saw an article in ComputerWorld where the gov't is going to issue to Federal employees biometric ID cards. These are just the early ones with an thumb print. They come with 32 mb of RAM for storage.
I guess its no worse than our TX drivers license with the swipe stripe. There are several stores that when you want to pay by check they swipe you drivers license for a positive ID.
